Cancer Connections is delighted to announce that we have a new Patron. Dame Margaret Barbour, DBE DL, Chair of the Barbour Foundation and J.Barbour & Sons Ltd, the global clothing empire, has officially accepted our invitation during a recent visit to our home base at Harton Lane, South Shields.
Our recently appointed Chairwoman, Councillor Fay Cunningham, said: “We are absolutely delighted Dame Margaret Barbour has accepted our invite to become our patron. The appointment is even more special as the Barbour Foundation has been one of our biggest supporters ever since we started. We are extremely lucky at Cancer Connections in the ongoing support we receive from our patrons, who we have a fantastic relationship with. Everyone at Cancer Connections is looking forward to working with Dame Margaret.”
Dame Margaret joins our very talented and active Patrons, X-Factor winner Jade Thirlwall from Little Mix and Josef Craig MBE, Paralympic Gold Medallist and BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year 2012. Josef competed again in the 2016 Rio Paralympics, achieving the Bronze medal in the 100 metres Freestyle Swimming event. We thank him and Jade for their continuing support, which makes a huge difference to us at Cancer Connections.
As Patrons, Jade and Josef visit us at Cancer Connections throughout the year, but particularly at special events. Here they are at a Christmas party.
Volunteers prepared the food, Santa brought gifts for the children, Josef brought one of his medals and Young Sports Personality Award and he, with Jade, signed autographs. A few hours with friends when cancer could be forgotten, and a joyful start to Christmas.
